Do you want to feel confident when talking in social situations? One of the most social places to meet and chat with people is the PUB!

What is the pub?

A pub is an informal slang word for a “hotel” that serves alcohol. This is similar to a bar, or club, but it’s a much more relaxed, casual kind of place.

Going to the ‘pub’ is a big part of Australian and British culture (and American!). It’s also a great place (even if you don’t drink alcohol) to both listen to native English speaker conversations and practice your social English skills!

So in this video I teach you 6 Common Expressions you can use at the pub (or bar) and also for other social situations.

Remember to interact with the lesson. So repeat the phrases out aloud after me. And write them down.

In the lesson I talk about these expressions;

  1. It’s my shout.
  2. It’s on me.
  3. It’s my round.
  4. On the rocks.
  5. Let your hair down.
  6. Get plastered.

Have fun incorporating these expressions into your social English. You don’t have to like drinking alcohol or going to pubs to use these expressions. As I explain in the video, you can use some of them for other social outings such as going to cafes, restaurants, the movies and other social events.

*Challenge yourself to BOOST your English fluency. Go to a pub, bar, cafe or social event. Sit down (maybe grab a drink!) and listen to the conversations around you. Just listen. Then, if you feel like it, ask someone a question. Start a conversation with someone. Even if it’s the barman / barmaid. (Sometimes this is easier – they are usually always friendly and have time to talk – if it’s not too busy). Go to a pub that is not too busy to start with.

Have fun!
