Are you having trouble staying motivated?
Are you trying to learn English all alone?
You have goals to improve your English but it’s happening very slowly?
Studying a language alone through self-study can be very difficult to maintain on a daily basis.
I have some tips for you!
Why are you studying English? Think about it. Do you want to find a job in an English speaking country like England, the United States or Australia? Do you need to improve your English for your current job? Maybe you want to travel overseas and you need English to talk to the natives. (see my special Holiday Intensive Course) Or maybe you want to go on a Working Holiday to Canada or London for 6 months.
Whatever your goal is, choose a clear one. Write it down. Set a TIME PERIOD (E.g., 6 months from now I will reach Intermediate level with my English). This will keep you focused and give you a reason to study.
2. FIND AN ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER
What is this? This is someone who knows your goals and keeps you accountable to them. You tell the person your goal and they check that you have done your tasks each week! Find someone who also wants to improve his or her English and arrange to meet once a week to track your progress and practice together.
3. PRACTICE WITH PEOPLE!
Practicing your English alone is not enough to become a fluent speaker. You need to practice and engage with other people.
Some suggestions;
Find a LANGUAGE EXCHANGE PARTNER
This is a free way to practice your English. You can find someone who is a native English speaker and wants to also practice your native language. Arrange to meet regularly online with Skype or Face-to-Face in your city.
Important notes;
- A language exchange partner is not an English teacher. So don’t expect a special lesson or grammar knowledge. This person should not replace your English teacher. You should use a language exchange partner to support your English lessons so you can practice what you learn in class.
- Be aware of safety. You won’t know this person at first, so arrange to meet in a public place like a library, park or café. If you don’t feel comfortable with this person, look for another partner.
WHERE TO FIND YOUR ENGLISH LANGUAGE EXCHANGE PARTNER
- Ask your friends, colleagues or English teacher. The best way to find a language exchange partner is through a personal connection.
- www.meetup.com – This is a great site where you can join any kind of interest group and meet with other people. They have all kinds of groups such as Movie lover groups, Musician groups and Walking groups. What a great way to meet like-minded people and practice your English! You can usually find an English Language exchange group on this site.
