A Real Conversation With Narelle.
OUR FIRST JOBS
Many English classes and courses use scripted dialogues and materials using actors who read the lines. These are all useful materials to study but often they are not ‘natural examples’ of how we use English in the real world.
In a real conversation there are other factors that can be it difficult to understand, such as speed of speech, connected speech (when words join together), different accents (Australian, British, South African etc), and in particular, slang, idioms and phrasal verbs.

Many students tell me they want more practice listening to real conversations and they want to get better at understanding native speakers. So I decided to record some conversations with some of my friends. I’ve started with a friend named Narelle, who is also an actor.
In this first real conversation, we talk about our first (and second) jobs. The first job we ever had in our lives and what that experience was like for us. So in this lesson I’ve have highlighted certain common expressions and slang, as well as some grammar and pronunciation points. You can just watch and enjoy the conversation or you can actively participate by ‘pausing’ the video when a sentence comes up on the screen and speak it out aloud. You could also write it down in your notebook as well (if you want to be really committed!)
I have also made a “Language Analysis” PDF worksheet for you that you can download. In this PDF I breakdown some of the most common expressions, slang, grammar and patterns of speech for you.
I think you’ll like this! Leave a comment if you have any thoughts or suggestions for future lessons and videos.
